SKYLINE PTSA EMAIL BLAST #1 - WELCOME BACK!

Hello 2008-2009 Skyline PTSA Members!

THANK YOU FOR JOINING.

If you’re receiving this email blast it means you’ve successfully joined the Skyline PTSA for the 2008-2009 school year. Thank you! We’re up to just over 1,000 members. We still have a way to go to reach our customary 100% membership, which means there’s one adult member for every student enrolled at Skyline. We need about 300 more members to make our goal. Please nudge anyone you know of who hasn’t yet joined to do so. (And they can do it at Curriculum Night – see below.)

GOT AN EXTRA LINCOLN FOR LAB SCIENCE?

Actually, we could use a little more than a Lincoln. We’re a little slower than usual to get to our pass-the-hat fundraising goal this year. This is the only fundraiser we do, and we count on it to fund all the grants and programs we do to benefit all the students at Skyline. For example, this year, in addition to the $10,000 we have budgeted to give out in Spartan Grants to staff, we also plan to give an $8,500 grant to Skyline to pay for science consumables in all lab sciences. That’s beakers, chemicals, lab masks, slides - you name it - for all biology, chemistry, physics and environmental science classes. If you donated to pass-the-hat when you joined, thank you. (Can you give a little more?) If you didn’t, would you like a second chance? If you’d like to donate more, or if you’ve joined but haven’t donated yet, go to http://www.skylineptsa.org/news/news2.htm, download the form and send it with your check to the address shown. If your employer matches your donations, please include your employer’s information in the space provided.

SEPTEMBER 23RD – BIG NIGHT: PTSA AND THE COUNSELING CENTER PRESENT…

September 23rd at 7 pm we’ll have a short PTSA General Membership meeting in rooms 102-103. Please join us, so we can approve our budget and goals for the year. Directly following our meeting, the Counseling Center will be presenting two seminars to help you and your student plan ahead for life after Skyline. One seminar, “Making the Most of the National College Fair,” will help guide students and parents at all grade levels about how to make the best use of the National College Fair (see below). The second seminar, “IB Student Panel: Life in the IB Program, Is It For You?” will feature a panel of IB students to talk about their experience in the IB program, how they decided whether to pursue the full diploma or to take certificate exams, how they balance the course load and their extracurricular activities, etc. These two seminars will be offered twice so that you can attend both.  It all starts at 7 pm in rooms 102-103.

MORE PLANNING FOR COLLEGE…

The Skyline PTSA sponsors SAT Prep Courses and Mock SAT tests as well as Mock ACT tests throughout the year to help students get ready for the real thing. These prep courses and mock tests are open to students at all grade levels. You can pick up registration forms at the PTSA’s table at Curriculum Night, or log on to our website, http://www.skylineptsa.org/programs/collegereadiness.htm. Deadlines for the first prep classes and mock tests are fast approaching.

HEAD SWIMMING WITH QUESTIONS ABOUT COLLEGE ADMISSIONS TESTING?

Here are TWO things you can do. 1. Look over our Frequently Asked Questions on College Admissions Testing, which is on our PTSA website at http://www.skylineptsa.org/forms/SAT_ACT_FAQs.htm.  2. Talk to your child’s Skyline counselor. It’ll be OK. Everyone gets through this.

ACING THE COLLEGE APPLICATION.

The Career Center offers seminars throughout the year to help get students ready for life after Skyline. The first seminar, September 16th in the theater beginning at 7pm, is called “Acing the College Application.” It’s targeted to seniors and their parents, but students and parents at all grade levels are welcome.
