SKYLINE PTSA EMAIL BLAST #8 – January 7, 2009

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

SHS PTSA MEETING JANUARY 27TH

Please join us at 7pm in rooms 102/103/104 for a brief business meeting (believe it or not, it’s time to elect a nominating committee for next year) followed by some much more interesting stuff: Q & A with Principal Lisa Hechtman and a presentation by Kelly Munn, our legislative rep, in which she will spin a tale about the state of education funding in our state that will make your toes curl. In fact, you’ll be so mad – and worried -- that you’ll want to jump right up and go… do something! Well, with the legislative session beginning next Monday, now’s the time. Come learn the hard facts and find out what you can do. Two things you should put on your calendar right away:

Ø    Join us on February 4th for a hands-on, legislative gear-up session called “The Time is Now: Education Reform in Olympia.” You’ll get an update on basic education reforms being considered by the legislature and practical guidance from a seasoned education lobbyist about what each of us can do to help make needed reforms happen. Click on the link, above, to read the flyer with more details.

Ø    Join us on the steps of the Capitol at the Focus Day rally in Olympia February 27th. The more parents, the better if we’re going to make the evening news. Contact me or Kelly if you’d like to carpool.

WE NEED A COUPLE OF PARENTS FOR OUR NOMINATING COMMITTEE

As just mentioned, at our January 27th General Membership meeting, we need to elect our Nominating Committee, which is charged with recommending a slate of officers – President, Secretary, Vice President and Treasurer – for next year’s PTSA Board. We’re especially in need of parents from this year’s freshman and sophomore classes. If you’re interested, please contact me ASAP! This is a great way to “dip your toe” into PTSA without having to make a big time commitment.

WHAT ARE TEENS REALLY DOING WHEN THEY’RE OUT OF YOUR SIGHT?

Can you honestly say you know for sure? And do you fully understand the extent of the legal consequences – to them and to you – of their potential misdeeds? All three ISD high school PTSAs have teamed with their resource officers and local law enforcement officials for three evening discussions called, “What Teens are Really Doing Today…A Sobering Panel Discussion for Parents of Middle School and High School Students led by Issaquah, Sammamish, and King County Police Officers.” This panel discussion, which expands on the booklet, “Parents, Teens and the Law” that all middle and high school students have received, will be held in each of the high school service areas: IHS on Feb. 2nd, Skyline on Feb. 9th, and Liberty on Feb. 23rd. Mark your calendars for whichever evening you can attend; there’ll be more information to follow.

COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS COLLECTION TOMORROW (THURSDAY)

The next opportunity for your student to have their community service hours recorded will be at both lunches tomorrow, Thursday, January 8th.

A FEW SUPER COOL, CUSTOMIZABLE FLASH DRIVES STILL AVAILBLE

Were your kids disappointed that they didn’t get one of our must-have customizable flash drives this holiday season? We still have a very few available in the 1, 2, and 4 gigabyte sizes, priced at  $15, $20, and $25, respectively. These were a huge hit at the Booster Club’s Holiday Bazaar in December. The recipient can customize the flash drives any way they want, including adding their name and phone number and a Spartan logo. If you’re interested, email Suzanne Weaver and let her know how many of which size you want. While supplies last!

SKYLINE SWEEPS THE REFLECTIONS DISTRICT COMPETITION!

Congratulations to NINE Skyline students who advanced to District Finalists in the High School category!  These are individual awards given through a blind judging process, and Skyline took nine out of ten awards given at this level.  WOW! The District Finalists are: Michelle Snyder - Visual Arts; Kevin Maybee - Visual Arts; Dave Lee - Visual Arts; Jenna Kovalsky – Photography; Claire Giordano -  Photography; Brian Burgess – Photography; Claudia Ma – Literature; Mark Mulka – Literature; and Bill Dow – Literature. These students now represent the Issaquah School District at the State level of competition. Congratulations and best of luck at State!

Ø    If you’d like to cheer on these individuals, join us at a District-wide Reflections Reception on Tuesday, January 20th at 7pm at PCFC.

PARENTS: ARE ANY OF YOU CLOSET POETS?

The Issaquah Arts Commission is helping to launch a new event on Tuesday, January 20.  Starting that night, and every third Tuesday of each month thereafter, Vino Bella at 99 Front Street in downtown Issaquah will host an open mic poetry reading starting at 7:00 p.m. A perfect escape from the winter blues if you are a poet, an aspiring poet, or a poetry lover.
